FSL-French as Second Language


Program initiating French Language. This program is based on the Quebec scale of French proficiency levels for migrants; 450 Class hours; from Levels 1 to 4; autonomous level of communication in French and intermediate mastery of grammar and spelling.

The MLC College FSL program consists of 4 levels and is conducted over 20 weeks of full-time courses:

Beginner I: Initiation to French
Duration: 4 weeks/ 80 Hours.
Content Basic language code to meet immediate and predictable needs.
Oral Acquire minimal understanding and production with the help of the interlocutor.
Written Partially understand simple texts and write down simple information.
Beginner II: Functional Communication
Duration 5 Weeks/ 100 Hours
Content Exchanges with the entourage in predictable situations about common topics of daily life
Oral Understanding and expressing request and information through linked or coordinated simple sentences
Written Understand almost entirely short and simple texts. Write short messages and produce simple, complete and sometimes interconnected sentences. Limited mastery of grammar and spelling.
Intermediate I: Interactive Communication
Duration 5 Weeks / 100 Hours
Content Participate in conversations and make informal presentations
Oral Interactively exchange with simple, complex and interconnected phrases with the use of the past and the present tenses. Express wishes, feelings or needs.
Written Understand the essential of texts that present some difficulties. Write short texts structured in paragraphs
Intermediate II: Autonomous Communication
Duration 6 Weeks / 120 Hours
Content Participate to conversations and make informal presentations
Oral Communicating and understanding independently in predictable or partially predictable situations
Written Fully understand general interest texts of several pages with complex sentences, unusual words, implicit ideas and some ambiguities or abstractions. Write formal texts that meet the basic requirements of different backgrounds. Intermediate mastery of grammar and spelling

Students who have succeed in this program can register to take the French language assessment required in order to apply for a CSQ.

Program objectives


This program is dedicated to international students whose main spoken language is not French and who wish to have the advantage of bilingualism to differentiate themselves in the Canadian employment market and to access a wider choice of career opportunities.

The program will allow students to reach an autonomous level of communication in French and to master sufficiently the basic rules of spelling and grammar.

At the end of this program, students will be able to understand and exchange around general and specific topics of everyday life and make informal presentations.

They will also be able to write formal texts that meet the requirements of schools and professional environments.
